Venetian Plaster

Venetian plaster is a decorative finish for walls and ceilings that mimics the appearance of polished marble or natural stone. Traditionally made of slaked lime and marble dust, it provides a visual depth and sheen that cannot be achieved with conventional paint.

Main Characteristics
  • Natural Composition: The traditional base consists of lime, marble dust, and natural pigments, making it eco-friendly and free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
  • Durability: As it dries, the material undergoes a carbonation process that essentially turns it into stone, hardening over time.
  • Mold Resistance: Due to its high natural alkalinity (high pH), it acts as a fungicide that inhibits the growth of mold and bacteria.
  • Breathability: It allows walls to “breathe,” preventing moisture from being trapped, which is ideal for regulating indoor humidity.

Types of Finishes
Depending on the technique and the marble grain used, different effects can be achieved:
  • Veneziano (Stucco Lustro): A classic high-gloss finish, smooth with a mirror-like effect.
  • Marmorino: Features a finer grain that offers a satin sheen and a subtle stone texture.
  • Travertine: Recreates the look of quarried stone, with more rustic veins and textures.
  • Metallic Effects: Modern variations incorporating gold, silver, or copper pigments for a contemporary glow.

Application Process
The application is artisanal and requires patience, as it is done in several stages:
  1. Preparation: The surface must be perfectly smooth and clean. A special primer is applied to ensure adhesion.
  2. Base Layers: Two to three very thin layers of plaster are applied with a stainless steel trowel, allowing each to dry.
  3. Burnishing: While the plaster is still slightly fresh, the surface is rubbed with the trowel to compact the material and create its characteristic shine.
  4. Sealing: A layer of protective wax (such as beeswax) is usually applied to repel dirt and increase the gloss.
